Once you are done with your teeth alignment with Invisalign, you still have to wear retainers quite regularly. Most patients are a little upset when their dentist/orthodontist tells them that they would have to wear retainers for the rest of their lives.
The additional costs associated with retainers appear to be an extra burden, not to mention the extra effort required to wear them. In this article, we will explain some frequently asked questions about retainers.
Why are they necessary?
When you get your teeth aligned, they move into a new position softening the jaw bone in that area. The place left vacant by the teeth is naturally filled in due to bone growth. However, the bone growth happens over a very long period of time, and your teeth could easily shift during that time. Retainers help keep your teeth in the desired position during the bone growth period.
How often do I have to use them?
After completion of your alignment procedure, you have to wear the retainers about 12-20 hours a day for a year. About 12 hours a day for a few months after that, and 4 to 5 days a week during your sleep for the rest of your life. The recommended time periods may vary from case to case and from patient to patient.
What retainers do you recommend?
We recommend Vivera retainers. They are clear plastic retainers which are very similar to the Invisalign aligners; they are made from the same technology and are easy to use. Once you get to a point where you only have to wear them a few hours a day, you can simply put them on before you go to bed, and remove them in the morning.
Your teeth will stay in perfect position, just like the day you finished your alignment procedure.
