Orthodontic treatment for kids and teenagers is a process that usually involves active involvement from family members, especially parents. The first step is to take your kid/teen to the orthodontist/dentist and get a recommendation.
The dentist/orthodontist is the best person to determine whether your child qualifies for the Invisalign treatment, or if some other treatment is required. Cases of moderate dental problems such as cross-bite, crooked teeth, crowding, and minor gaps between teeth can be fixed with the help of Invisalign aligners. However, major dental problems have to be solved by other means.
If the dentist/orthodontist recommends the Invisalign procedure, you have to make sure your child/teenager is on board. Once committed to the treatment, your child will have to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day, for a time period ranging from 6 months to 1 year.
Every time the aligners are taken off, they have to be cleaned before being put back on. Every time the patient eats or drinks something other than water, he/she has to brush and floss before putting the aligners back in place.
While the Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, and protect the patient’s gums against damage, they also apply a moderate force to the patient’s teeth, in order to bring them into a perfect formation. Initially, the patients feel mild pressure in their teeth and gums, and sometimes get a temporary lisp during the procedure.
The Invisalign procedure is fairly common, but it hasn’t completely replaced the traditional metallic wire and braces. All your child’s friends may be using more traditional treatments, and this may result in some resistance on your child’s part.
As a parent, you have to facilitate the procedure, and guide your child so that the treatment can be finished effectively and efficiently, and your child can have that Hollywood smile.
